The creation and decoration of textiles and items used in the home has been the accepted way for women in many cultures to express themselves artistically. Women who painted were expected to stay with appropriate subject matter, such as the still life
Art was a man’s profession. When one thinks about great painters, the first persons who come to mind are not Judith Leyster, Artemisia Gentileschi, Elisabeth-Louise Vigee-Lebrun and Angelica Kauffman.
This work is part of my ongoing interest of the history of women in art (often the model but rarely the artist). The women in my paintings are recognizable figures, but that is because we recognize them from the paintings for which they modeled. In my work they become another object in a still life.
