This is a large acrylic painting on canvas measuring 66" x 48" in size that has been framed with a rustic solid wood frame. It was done in 1983 while I was attending NYU for my Masters Degree in studio art and led to a stylistic change and my adoption of my slashing and throwing action style of the time period to come. It is named "Seagulls" as it looked a little like a Flock of Seagulls flying through a colorful action painting. When I first did that painting it caused quite a stir. Many of the more "Punk" devotees in the early eighties saw it as an abomination of color and others saw the true beauty in it. They fought over it for quite a while. The punk artists said it looked like "A Flock of Seagulls Flying through a Leroy Neiman Painting" and that it was an insult to their sensibilities. Like the Impression Sunrise painting by Monet, I went with the critics insults and named it just that, for some time, until I just shortened it to "Seagulls". I actually met Leroy twice and discussed art with him once at the Whiney Museum in NYC. His work was considered too "commercial" by the "Fine Art crowd, and it was not considered to be true fine art, but I saw some things they did not and told him that. The second time I met him at a Met's baseball game. My mother always loved this painting and hung it in her den. She died the same day as the Haitian earthquake and sadly will never get to see my work much appreciated, except by people coming to visit her house. I later slowly switched from painting the more classic Impressionistic landscape "Dot" paintings that I had been making for the past 3 years, such as the "Lamp Post", to do more action works like this. I eventually even started doing large action paintings in front of crowds at art openings as performance art, but it all goes back to that painting. Unbelievably at the time Jackson Pollack's style was mostly forgotten and paintings such as these Performance Action paintings brought back a major interest. My "Fisherman" probably was an in between piece. Eventually, I feel I have melded the two abstract styles into my works and combined the realistic aspects, as well.
