This piece is about the contrast between the adults, darkened by the soot that has settled upon them throughout their lives, and the purity of youth, with their clean minds, hearts, and perfect feet--they have not walked down wearisome roads quite yet. They also have no calluses-- and therefore a visible lack of life experience.
