This oil on canvas is from 1982-83. It is framed and the frame is painted as well. Although technically a part of my early dot paintings this one is a bit different and has been developed over a longer period of time. It features a primary color scheme and also very fine detail. It is a predecessor of things to come. It measures 50" x 38" framed and 48" x 36" without. My self-portrait wearing Ray Ban dark sunglasses is is green in the lower right. The image is of two cypress trees standing like two lovers with the arm around the shoulder, below hidden into the corner, are two humans male and female mirroring this stance. This is a full moon at night and my neighbor has just built a wooden fence effectively cutting me off from my landscape, hence the title, "The Red Fence" and causing my frustration. The red fence itself becomes organic and grows before us. The bright moon glow casts it reflected light across the scene and this is the reason for the sunglasses. My NYU teacher, the famous photographer Diane Blell, really liked this one, as did one of my artist friends. I managed to hold onto it all these years. I have included a few shots of me with it at the time, while it was in progress.
