Ceres, goddess of grain and agriculture, contemplates a pomegranate - a reminder of her daughter Proserpina who has rejoined Pluto in the underworld. The deepening sorrow of Ceres was thought by the ancient Romans to bring about the end of summer and the onset of the long winter months.
