About this work:

Rejection of the gods and goddess of old and reconciliation to the one true God and His Son. This group is called Ho’opa’a (chanters). They chant the song and set the beat for the dancers. Their “drums” are fashioned from gourds and are called ipu heke. The male is using a pahu drum. I witnessed this scene many years ago and was so emotionally moved by the power that emanated from the chanters that I knew someday I would have to paint it. The difference between the scene then and my depiction is they were actually chanting and dancing to honor Pele the Hawaiian fire goddess.
