About this work:


This painting contains three inter-related themes: Venice, carnival and the story of Tobias and the Angel which features a dog and a magical fish. The story appears in Salley Vickers' Venice-inspired novel Miss Garnet's Angel - in my version the angel is masked and wingless, and Tobias is dressed as a Harlequin, they are passing through the Ghetto district of the city. Other pictures echo this subject.
