About this work:

there are those who say that things exist only when perceived. that they do not exist when unperceived. then there are others who are convinced that, yes, things exist objectively. that they have an existence of their own - whether perceived or not. i wonder what the world of unperceived things looks like. i am specifically looking at plants and insects - in the very sense of "caochong", the chinese genre of "plants and insects painting" (12th century) and the spanish still lives of the 16th century. these, too, are far more than an observation of nature and a portrayal of what is visible. they look at things closely, and go beyond them, dive into certain unsettling undertows... this expansion or transcendence manifests itself in my choice of materials. oil on canvas is not enough. the sensuality of textures, the haptic experience, certain associations, tinges, connotations (fabrics, paints, glue, wood, tin, lead etc.) help me in my attempts to draw in on things, to playfully, experimentally get closer to their core.
