About this work:

  • Clothing
  • charcoal on paper/silkscree...
  • 8 x 10 inches

In 1985, Jay Cocks for Time Magazine predicted
"Madonna will be out of the business in six months."

But she did last.

And on February 6, 2008, Madonna raised $5.5 million for "A Night to Benefit Raising Malawi and Unicef" at the United Nations... in Gucci.

Raising Malawi is an Orphan Care Initiative Madonna co-founded with Michael Berg, partnered with Jeffrey Sachs, Bill Clinton and others, working to feed, educate and help improve the health and agriculture of the South East African country of Malawi - one of the poorest in the world.

Malawi has a population of 13 million and about 1 million are orphans fighting AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and drought.

In 2006, Madonna legally adopted a boy from Malawi now named David Banda Mwale Ciccone Ritchie.

Her critics might not have seen it coming from a singing, dancing Madonna who toyed with Patron Saints, crucifixion, crown of thorns and The Virgin Mother.
But sometimes, charity works in mysterious ways.

As a pop star, the world dubbed her as the Material Girl.
As a humanitarian, aykaayka.com calls her
Our Lady of Malawi.
