This dark shadowy etching is printed on acid-free heavy-weight paper and is completely reversible. It is about my time spent in NYCs many dark places. There are plenty of things floating around the composition. Back during this time period of my life, before I moved to New Jersey, Times Square was not the fancy mall it is today. The city to me is always evolving and each time I go back I think about my time there. In a nutshell, an etching is done by scratching an image onto a copper, or zinc plate that has a waxy protective coating, that has been previously applied and dried to it. A stainless steel needle scratches through the wax, exposing the metal below. Acid is then used to make the scratches deeper in the metal and special ink is rubbed into the metal plate's scratches, this is done in order to ink it. A large press is used to press the ink from out of the scratches, onto a piece of damp acid-free art paper. I use many interesting artistic techniques in making my art, I took a class at the New School in NYC in order to learn how to do this old printmaking method. This plate was made and printed at this time. I lived in Brooklyn and worked in Manhattan. When my daughter was born we played "football" with our daughter, by handing her off to each other, as we were working at different times of the day and night. I took my bicycle onto the subway and took it to work, then rode it back across the Brooklyn Bridge to home at 3 pm in the morning. Subways were way too unpredictable, and dangerous, at that time of night. I rode the trains plenty at late hours, I would draw during the different rides, but I just decided to try peddling the 15 miles home each night. It was great exercise, you should have seen my leg muscles! I walked like I was bow legged! It was really a cool ride through Manhattan, but you had to really keep your wits about you. I would go right through Prospect Park at that time of night (I made some nice paintings there too) and as you probably guessed, there weren't many people around. At late night it was me on my bike and there were the garbage trucks and the cabbies. I had wonderful rides, except for the time I went to go across the Brooklyn Bridge and a small gang was already there, and they spread out in front of me. They let me by, maybe I looked a little dangerous to them! I made this etching, now if you purchase it, it will be up to you to get it framed. I always suggest acid-free materials to be used in the process.
