Religion is a recurring theme in my works. Its simplicity (some would say naiveté), in trying to explain the things around us. Painted on weathered and slightly warped plywood, primed with acrylic gesso.

I truly love this piece; it's very reminiscent of Frida Kahlo's work-- that certain wistful quality, the incorporation of written word, the banner... is she an influence for you? I admire her immensely. who are some of your favorite artists?

Joseph Bernadas:

Thank you, Veruca. Yes, I admire Frida Kahlo's works, aside from her, my influences are ex-votos and religious icons found in old catholic churches in the Philippines and Mexico. Some of my favorite artists are Ai Weiwei, Fernando Botero, Pablo Picasso, Hieronymus Bosch, Hans Memling, Rufino Tamayo and Charlie Co.

wow! from that list I only know Picasso and Bosch (both of whom I love), so thank you for sharing those others-- I'm going to look them up! I always like to discover new artists. I too am influenced by religious icons and imagery; there's something simultaneously beautiful and eerie, sometimes even scary, in religion, because of the power of it, the significance of it throughout history, the instances of trans-cultural religious corruption. I'm fascinated by the human interpretation, application and adaptation of religion-- how we incorporate it into our lives, how we modify it to justify our comforts and to conform to our personal preferences... and so all of that humanness, the essence of the human condition, tied into what in theory is meant to be beautiful and pure, is endlessly fascinating. Religion, sexuality, and mortality are among the strongest influences for my creative process, because they're such essential aspects of humanity. I love Medieval and Renaissance work too.
