In this paradoxical, yet delicately symbolic painting, Jon Jaylo depicts the seemingly chaotic concept of choosing between the usage of the heart or the mind. Keeping his prime trademark of devising illusions into poetic renditions of visual art, the artwork was bordered within the squared closures of a typical playing card. This symbolic imagery suggests that love is composed of inevitable duels and endless conflicts. However, as unlike the appearance of normative playing cards are perceived, this one is a hybrid, a helpless queen trapped in choosing whether to be a patron of spades or of hearts. A beautiful sin indeed, ladies merging for the security of money and the cold embrace of power. the figure on her right side portrays an image of a bright, sunny future and a man who has lost all hopes of fixing the gap between his queen. The broken violin suggests that he is done courting her. However, on her left side, lies another beautiful sin. A blindfolded character who continues to court the queen despite her entwinement within the confines of marriage. His skin is pale and his background is dark, synching as a complete anti-thesis to the figure on the lady’s right. This simply presents an allegory with death, complete with the black scorpion perched within the heart symbolizes death within the choice of true love. The lady is plunged into a confusion of moral and social dilemmas, waiting for someone to advice her whether to listen to the whisper of her heart or the coercive pleas of her mind.
