This is the previous Pope, John Paul II, at the end of his life, two days before he died. I'll never foget him, it was a devastating moment for all of us who were in St Peter's that day, when the Pope came to his window to speak to us but couldn't speak. He tried and nothing came out. The frustration and despair was visible, but beyond that, it was a silent scream for the human condition, an immortal expression of his compassion.
