About this work:

  • Sculpture
  • cast aluminum, welded steel...
  • 8' X 17'

A woman clothed with the Sun. The Phoenix myth and my city's continual rebirth from the ruins of the ancient Hohokam civilization's canal networks in the Salt River Valley left me with a spirit of fusion envisioning this work. Most especially though, the fact that by 1976 human flight had become largely routine. The idea that so potent a dream, expressed over several millenia of civilization, could be taken for granted within three generations just blew my mind. I felt that seeing it in these terms might awaken some sense of our favored position in world history. The eternal optimist, I still do.

This work was undertaken before the advent of the various municipal art commissions in metropolitan Phoenix and created on the basis of a verbal agreement with the long time Aviation Director at Sky Harbor.

He passed away just prior to the Terminal 3 completion. The sculpture was designed to hang above the escalator well with the movement imparting life to the mobile qualities, but the work was never placed. The photograph was taken at the works placement in the barrel vaults of "Arcosanti" for the 1979 Summer Solstice festival. It remains in my collection.
