Le Game/The Aesthesian Focus (Self Portrait)
Full Title is:
Le Game / The Aesthesian Focus (Self Portrait)
Dimensions: 100cm x 74cm x 4 cm
It is a self-portrait, and the only one I will ever paint.
I wanted to use self-portraiture as a vehicle to emphasize that it is the actions/creations of the individual that make them who they are, NOT their physical identity.
Hence, the cloaked figure, brandishing a guitar, and brushes.
This work is also my first use of symbology.
The two 'chess-pieces' in the background are traditional Western symbols: the one on the left represents the human consciousness, and faculty for higher reason. The one on the right stands for the assimilating, receptive aspect of man, namely in his/her interplay with nature.
The chessboard speaks for itself.
The gradation of the 'rubix' cube in the sky, to be 'solved' with a symbol of musical notation, also speaks for itself.
The brushes undergo a change in their cast shadows.
Critical feedback is warmly welcomed,
I hope the new year is being good to everyone,
