There is a point in a typical saltwater fly cast on the flats, where the line, driven by inertia, doubles back on itself. Called a "Tight Loop", the lower part of the line slows and the upper part of the line continues over the top, unfurling the cast and the complete length of the fly line far into the distance, some hundred feet from the fisherman. The fly is carried by the weight of the line and the supple 9' (3 meter) long rod is longer and much lighter than that used in typical fishing equipment. There are many different weights of line available each with a specific purpose and quarry and a different reel and rod combination is needed for each particular line weight. In this case here an 8 or 9 weight was used. The reel has an effortless drag system for slowing the fish and the reel is needed to store the line as needed. The tippet or leader is a very light, practically invisible line located at the tip of the flyline and it is the connection to the fly. On the other end of the fly line is a long length of backing line which is needed because of the short length of the fly line. The unique style of hat worn here has a bib on the rear section to protect the fisherman's neck from the strong sunlight reflecting off the surface of the water. Lightweight, fast dry clothing and hard boots worn to protect the feet are utilized here. Polaroid sunglasses, which cut the glare on the surface of the water, allows the fisherman to wade and see the fish coming beneath the water. The fish is usually seen first, before the cast is made and on the shallow flats, the available sunlight is a must for aid in the spotting of the fish. The fish are very strong and extremely fast bottom feeders with mouths like a mouse. They are released unharmed, but are not easy to hook or to catch.
