"I came upon this raccoon in the Oakland hills one morning in the early winter, 2003. It had just rained so there were a lot of seasonal creeks flowing through this particular redwood grove. I walked down the trail with my tripod in one hand and my 4x5 camera in the other, watching the light change through the trees. I heard a noise and turned to see this raccoon slowly pulling itself through some underbrush. I stood back to make sure it wasn't rabid or injured and waited for about ten minutes. It finally dragged itself into the middle of the stream and curled into the fetus position. Feeling safe enough, I moved into position over the animal and set up the camera. After focusing, the clouds passed and the sun filtered through the trees illuminating the grey and white animal beautifully on the dark forest floor. I quickly metered, pulled the dark slide and shot the negative. It was quite an experience, to witness an animal dying peacefully, like it was ready to pass on..."
