The pattern reminds me of patterns found in nature. The texture, pattern, and color all work really well together here. There is something a little bit unsettling about the color combination, which definitely fits with the theme. My only criticism would be that it is too beautiful to convey the horrors of strip mining :)
yes, I thought about that too. When I was little my dad had a small plane and we would sometimes fly over this strip mine. It really looked beautiful to me as a kid, I did not understand the damage that was being done. So I wanted to capture the innocence of that time. not sure if that explains it well enough.

this piece is representative of both my fascination with and fear of the impact of man on nature. It is more literal than most of my work, but that is because the subject matter (strip mining) has its own abstraction that I always thought was both horrible and beautiful.
