Sally Trueman
Artist’s Statement 2008
The source of inspiration and subsequent imagery in
much of my work is rooted in Toulouse, France; the principle
theme of my art deals with the complexities of
movement, predominantly the hip-hop dancers in the Toulouse
metro.
I want my paintings to disturb the viewer by treating
the movement on the canvas as a witness of life that
has already past: the dancer’s movement fleetingly
captured and sandwiched between heavy texture creates a focus of interest. At the same time, the thin glazes create total emptiness: the dance is over and done with.
Much of my work takes on a strong element of shape
through a combination of abstract and visual forms. It
does not explore the individuality of the dancers but
distils emotion and feeling in a distinctive form.
Drawing and photography are essential aspects of my work. I have to go out and get my own information and bring it back to the studio.
Painting is not an easy option. It is difficult. It’s
about what you perceive, what your emotions are and
the marks you eventually put on canvas. My work is a
constant process of painting, adjusting and repainting.
The process of scraping and wiping down the paint surface, repainting and repositioning gives the canvas a feeling of being overworked. I fail a lot of the time and destroy a great deal of my work. The idea that an
artist can “just do it” is total fiction.
My work is an ongoing exploration of the sensation of
movement and what it means to be alive.
