About shkanin:

Biography

“Color is what the artist should possess firstly. My world outlook is expressed in the differences of images. Each new painting should convey a unique harmonious combination of form and color. And each subject matter demands special rhythm of color and drawing. The artist’s aim is besides finding in him and combining different opposites of works of art from classical to abstract art be capable of expressing a pure and clear feeling on the canvas.”
M. Shkanin

Michael Shkanin was born 14 December, 1972 in the town of Smela, Ukraine.
In 1985- 1988 he was a student of an art school. In 1989-1990 he attended the lessons of Alexander Mozgovoy (member of the Ukraine Union of artists). At that period the artist specialized in water-colos.
In 1993 M.Shkanin becomes a student of Kiev University of Architecture. Alongside with his studies at the University M.Shkanin attends the lessons of Zoya Lerman in the Art Academy. In the atmosphere of creativeness which was a distinguished feature of Z. Lerman”s classes his first works of art appear. One of them, “Beggars” (1994, canvas, oil), is in a private collection in Moscow.
There were two personal exhibitions of M.Shkanin (1998, 2000) while he was a student. His works were demonstrated in the All-Ukrainian Art Exhibition in 1999; they were presented at the exhibition of Kiev artists in the gallery “On the Kreschatic”(2000) and at the exhibition under the aegis of the spiritual fund “Spadschina” (2000)
In 2000 the artist leaves for Moscow.
A series of town landscapes painted from life and impression belong to the period 2000-2005. Transparency of the channels in Venice, a broiling sun of Algeria, harmonious unity of light and shade in city streets are the themes the artist derives inspiration from. Expressive “jazz” compositions of color are represented in abstract works. The depth and complexity of human relations, philosophical concept of life are more vividly reflected in his figurative paintings.

“The diversity of M. Shkanin creativeness is surprising. M.Shkanin believes that a real artist must be capable of painting in any style – from realism to abstraction – creating a unique image and his own style which never repeats itself.
The main attention is being paid to color and composition.
Each painting of the artist is an entirely separate book; each image created by the artist is unique by itself.”

Esther Cobler
