When you produce work in a prolific way, as I do, its easy to start to disregard your own work, if it hangs around your space. I constantly am moving paintings, to show sometimes, and trying to store them so they don't become damaged.
Personally, when I have finished a painting, it doesn't really interest me any more, I am on with the next one. When visitors do come, as they do, to my studio, I have to get work out and show it, then the next, and so on, and they never go back quite like they did before, so now and again, one discovers a little damage and its quite dissapointing really to have to suffer this, basically because I dont know enough people of the right type to buy art. I dont mean collectors and agents and the "art business", but I mean ordinary folk who own houses that have large empty walls in their lounge and other big empty spaces, that need filling with colorful pieces of art.
I know they are out there, people who like art , in particular, painting.
Prices on my work reflect the amount of time spent on them, small pieces take less time and are less expensive. I only paint when I cannot do anything else BUT paint, so I go through a few weeks when I don't paint, usually when I'm trying to keep my life together paying bills and organising and networking, doing this etc.. and then one day I start a piece, almost without thinking to start a piece and I plunge headfirst into the project .
When this happens, nothing else matters apart from eating enough to keep going and even then, its hard to do that..Last night I was painting until I felt sick I was so hungry and exhausted I just HAD to go to bed, almost crawling in , literally, and going straight off.
Today, almost the same thing and I have a new piece almost ready, and I might have a buyer. I would like it to go straight out the door when it's done, so I dont see it again. There is always a faint possibility that I might see it again one day, and that would be a good thing. I would be struck, maybe, by my own work, in the same way that visitors to my studio are struck when they see the size and the body of work that I have to show.
So its my Mission in life to be able to get the work out the door as soon as its completed, after photographing it as well as can be achieved and claiming copyright of the image.
I love painting and hold it supreme amongst the expressive arts. Each painting is the unique product of time spent exclusively on it, by the painter. The struggle to make squidgy stuff that comes out of a tube into a piece of work that some one wants to own and have in their house to look at, is what its all about for me. For the person to gaze at the work and be transported for a moment into its dimension and lose themselves in it. I have seen it many times, really, any one who spends time at my place ends up with a favorite and the most common comment is that they could just look at it for hours.
If compliments were money I would be a very rich man, and in a way Im quite happy with the compliments I get, but one cannot pay the rent with compliments can one.
Long long story of life. Thankfully I paint again after a 'rest' for more than 20 years
I am an Abstract contortionist. Multi Dimensionalist
Looking into, not looking at. Direct exploration of brush marks, abstraction, colour, light, dimensionality, solidity, contours, repetitions and patterns, reflections on perception and painting with no plan.
I never make sketches or drawings or plans but just begin to paint, sometimes with an aim in mind , sometimes not, just a feeling for a colour or set of colours and sometimes an inkling of the finished piece.
Like painting without the conscious , logical part of the brain, but employing the mind and maybe the soul too.
Painting absolutely consumes me now. I am 53 years, free and single and I spend much of my time painting, I intend doing this now and will not have any more distractions from it. I hesitate to call myself "artist',prefer 'painter' and champion the cause of painting, the one truly organic individual creative challenge I have left to undertake.
My Work is for sale, even the ones marked not for sale.
I have no Idea what my work could be worth in the contemporary art world so now is the time for all you art market Sharks, DEALERS and Gallery owners to get in on me , Fleece me and make yourselves a fortune by Hyping up the price and re selling later. GO ON!!! make me an offer on any of the pieces, Tell me what you are prepared to pay for the piece and we can go from there.
