Jolyon Dupuy began exploring his latent creativity in the early nineties, having had no formal Art school training. He has always collected found objects many of which were from Kingsdown beach and its proximities having spent his childhood holidays in various cottages on the beach. His working career has been in ship broking, chartering ships all over the world for various clients, which is how he came to be scouring the beaches of Spetses for trouve to build his sons a boat - his first piece of work. Thereafter, his work developed from small pieces for indoor and outdoor spaces, to large scale beach sculptures built on Spetsian beaches, Kingsdown beach and recently a commission built on the Thameside at Greenwich. His materials are sourced mainly from the Kent coast, Greece and the River Thames, but also from skips, street side debris, discarded McDonald's toys and friendly donations. Nothing is unusable. Much of his work has a figurative element to it; faces, profiles, heads can be found hidden amongst the lines of the pieces, whereas the larger sculptures frequently reflect the sea, incorporating the horizon, mythical creatures and the weather into its components. The imagination of the observer serves to enhance the power of his pieces, the more you look, the more you see.

'i think freedom is all in the mind' I think the same. Looking at your sculptures, I can feel your mind, so freely. You see, freedom works here in many levels.

Thanks! it's funny but I've never even tried spraypaint (though it seems like a great medium for my style for sure). I do all my stuff in acrylic paint, color pencils & pastels. I gotta give spray paint a try though. Cheers! Gregory

Hello Jolyon, Thank you for your friendship, favoring and commenting on one of my artworks:-) I am very glad that we met through Holger's great art, now wait a minute, you are another such interesting, multifaceted person and it is wonderful to see your sculptures that somehow appear from the sea and return back to it. Nature is your great inspiration and the sensitive eye for a material, you are searching for, has been trained for years....I envy you your imagination and also the titles, you give to your kinetic and non - kinetic sculptures are simply very apt and full of humor, of course a good photography plays its role in your art as well!!! Bravo to you!!! Brilliant body of work. My appreciation and best wishes, Katerina

Hi, thx for your com.. "Dilly" like "remarkable, "especial" or "once in a blue moon" ;-) Oje ... it gives so many words for one ... sometimes it´s a bit difficult for me. But what´s "pickle" mean? A gherkin? ;-) Greetz

Hello again Jolyon, I have just looked at your website where I found more wonderful work. Would you mind if I asked how you attach the lengths of metal to the driftwood? With a glue?
Posted Sep 10, 2009 9:45pm.Peter Tudhope:
Absolutely love your work. I have been dabbling a little with some driftwood sculpture... you have explained things for me. I'll be back again and again, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed looking at your work. Regards, Pete.

Hi Jolyon, Thanks for your fave, and your comment...I actually do use found objects and indented boxes etc...they just don't show up very well in the photos. If you look at Burning Bush you can probably see the box filled with a twig, moss, mah jong tiles etc., also Jacobs Dream has brass feet and feathers and stone and a ladder. And other paintings...but again, they're hard to see. I imagine my photographical skills are somewhat wanting. Best, Suzanne
