I have been painting landscapes, figural works, and still lifes that capture fragments of the world. They first arrest the viewer in terms of composition and color and then resolve into surprising takes on content. I deal with modern issues of color and composition within a primarily realist context. Recently, I have begun to express my feelings about what is happening in the world in my "In The World" series. I work primarily in acrylic on canvas.
Prior to my art career I was professor at the School of Health Sciences, Hunter College, City University of New York. I authored four books, directed a masters program in health services administration, and pioneered courses in critical thinking and writing.
I found that "coming back to my first love, painting, made me younger -- and without the angst of youth." I was surprised that what I was moved to paint did not seem to be political, but instead were affirmations of life and a celebration of beauty, but now, the beauty I paint responds to the tawdry, ugly, and grotesque and is being contrasted with the real world of the terrible of our time.

I greatly enjoy your body of work. Our styles are rather different but you might enjoy seeing my take on the war in Iraq prompted by that early footage that was burned into our brains. I think your comments regarding this site may be right, but I don't think it hurts. One just needs to broadcast more widely. Chris

I particularly like the "World" work. A friend of mine wrote: "...qualities like optimism, hope and love become to difficult to sustain in a narrative without adequate counterbalance from the darker qualities of existence and human nature." In Eleanor's World series, the counterbalance is beautifully done and gives the viewer several options for focus. Very smart!

I can understand so much this last paragraph on your profile Eleanor. As an artist I truly believe that we can get our 'message' across in far better ways than any angst - be it youthful or ageing - but with those snapshots of the beauty that surrounds us all in a sometimes ugly world. Rosie X I found that "coming back to my first love, painting, made me younger -- and without the angst of youth." I was surprised that what I was moved to paint did not seem to be political, but instead were affirmations of life and a celebration of beauty, but now, the beauty I paint responds to the tawdry, ugly, and grotesque and is being contrasted with the real world of the terrible of our time.

The current issues you address visually are very powerful. The composition in combination with color choice the use of empty/ dramatic space as well as crowded space really imparts the mood and feeling of war, separateness and survival. All the while leaving me with a consciousness of what is missing or not there.
