About christopher ward:

At the present moment I have a studio at an artists run collective called Magenta Art based in north London, working at Magenta Art allows me to develop my practice and encourages dialogue between artists. My work is large scale highly detailed and complex multi layered mixed media paintings. I use animals as allegory and metaphor for the past and the use of mixed media and materials, primarily collage, spray paint and airbrush with the use of mechanical objects as stencils as a symbol for modernity.

At present my major influences are Low Brow/Outsider art, Street art, Tattoo Culture, Custom Bikes and Comics. 

Recently I have found new ways of working, experimenting by adding other forms of art practice and painting not considered as “high art” to my figurative monochrome paintings. With my latest series of work I have removed the photorealism of my previous paintings and I have became more experimental. This intern has made my practice become abstracted and grounded in Hyper Surrealism and Mythology.

When I start a painting I choose a specific animal that can have many connotations within various societies, so I research the animal it’s meaning and it’s role in local mythology. The role it plays in nature and its evolution to that specific part of the world that it resides. This could be of religious note or of more scientific reasons, so this process of research is an integral part of my practice.

My work is painted to entice and to repel but ultimately to trap the viewer within the work and make the viewer question the painting and them selves about their place within society. But I like to keep the true meaning of the painting hidden within layers of visual clues and traps that lead to other meanings or lead the viewer to there own conclusions.

Now I want to start working on larger scale paintings for more impact, I do believe at present my work does carry presence, but I want a more visual and visceral impact on the viewer. With this in mind I want use far more stencils, collage and build in more layers so the work becomes more abstracted and with a higher level of detail.
