About calicoade:

Born 1969 in Rochford, Essex, England. Living in Essex where I work as an Art & Design Lecturer at South East Essex College teaching on BND, Foundation Diploma and Degree Levels.
I produce mixed media work on wood or canvas. This work is made up of diverse materials such as sand, glue, wood, fabric, printed papers, hand-made papers, photographs, wood varnish, oil and acrylic paints.
The paintings may sometimes seem dark but they represent hope, the light within the darkness, this work aims to create a sense of equilibrium. This balance is very important, the balance between light and dark, order and chaos. This is expressed in the way each piece is created. Each piece is planned only as far as the geometric based structure that is used, the rest evolves as I react to each successive mark that is made. I like to make seemingly randon marks, throwing and pouring paint, then I add more considered marks to balance this chaos with order or structure. This process is repeated until I feel that the correct balance and depth has been achieved. The layers of these compositions hide as much as they reveal: the miscellaneous elements incorporated into the canvas, the images impressed on the canvas then covered with paint or other images - these are events in a history that is only partly visible to us. These works speak of the life of hands and the materials they handle: pressing, scattering, rubbing and scratching. Here layering becomes an allegory of both the artistic process and our relationship to the individuals past and its secrets.
