Painting en plein aire is the emotional foundation of my paintings, elemental nature: water, rocks, earth and sky, the movement and reflections of light throughout each day. I do no preliminary drawing, I just jump in, let it go where it will. The painting emerges on its own, or sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it means destroying a painting to bring it back to life.
I've recently begun a series of large studio paintings titled "The American Landscape." My intention is to develop an exhibition based on my current direction, eventually paintings that fill entire walls.
My palette is basic: earth red, raw and burnt sienna, raw and burnt umber, black, white, cobalt blue and viridian. I generally build the whole intuitively, working with one large brush ( and a cleaning rag ) and mixing colors both on the palette and on the painting. I mix blue, raw umber and white for my grays, adding other colors to make warmer or cooler tonalities. My vocabulary is warm and cool, light and dark, making marks, brush strokes like heart-rhythms.
My art education was in high school and later on from copying paintings from art books using oil pastels. I learn from my peers and visiting museums. A quote I like, "Beauty, after all, tends to a certain sameness, whereas there are so many interesting paths for ugliness to take."
Blake Gopnik, critic for the Washington Post
Learning to paint comes down to repetition and getting dirty. Few days disappoint and some are exceptional. The joy of painting is in the process, the act, being in the moment, experiencing the rhythm between the eye, the hand and the heart.

Thanks for your comparison of my Early Spring Morninng to works of Twachtman, who I have enjoyed for years. Didn't he study under the realist Frank Duveneck? I prefer Twachtman but both are good. Chris

Love the abstract expressionistic vision your landscapes purvey! Their energy is magnetic. This work is something plein air painters should take a good look at and endeavor to go beyond the too sweet representation of the environment. Thanks.

This is beautifull work. Reminds me of Monet's later paintings. Like him you stranscend from landscape and light to something quite abstract and personal.

thank u very much for your comment... And I´m glad that you like my digital work as and exception. I will definitely describe the process in each work because it also has a lot of manual work with phisical paint, photography, and ofcourse computer as a medium to assemble(like a collage). By the way, i relly love your works: very powerfull. respect

Hi dear artist. First, I thank your so much for your stimulating comment on "La fille au turban bleu". I like that period so much as well as the german impressionism. I put, in my paintings, the colors that I don't wear. LOL What you write about you in your profile and how you approach a white canvas is very interesting. You are an authentic person and it shows in each of your painting. The light in them reminds me of the impressionnism.Congratulations for your work!

Thank you for your advice, May be you are right about editing, I will see how it works for a couple of weeks or less and then I decide, you can see I am just starting here. About lucian freud, I think I can still learn a lot about his work but is not only him, there are so many names moving my work, now I can think about Velazquez, Sorolla, Auerbach, Marlene Dumas, Walter Sickert, Van Gogh, Monet... so I hope in 30 years of painting I can get where I want in painting, without their presence in my work. By the way Your work is really good!
