About ErikGran:

Erik earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts and completed graduate work at Columbia University. This led to a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1976. He was born in Finland in 1951.

The Work

His work comes by way of Twentieth Century European and American Art.

Many of his works are landscape based abstracts with roots in Color Field painting and Expressionism. He still exploring and evolving, and finds other artists and approaches fascinating. He has just recently started to promote his work to the public.

He has exhibited at the Edward Hopper House in Nyack, New York, and has work in the Visual Arts Archive at Columbia University.The Visual Arts Archive is an on line and published edition devoted to alumni artists.

In 2007 he received a regional development grant. The same year one of his works was accepted into a museum collection at the Stevens County Historical Museum in Morris, Minnesota. His work is held by several arts organizations, and has been awarded in a number of juried shows.

Presently he works in three styles. He works in an Improvisational Style, which is a jazz like style developed directly on canvas. He also works in a Compositional Style, which is based more on sketches. Around 1990 he began to work in a Figurative Style. He has since done a number of other paintings in that style.

Presentation

Works on canvas and plywood panel have painted edges. Works on watercolor paper are typically matted under glass in a clear wood frame.
