About Dora:
As a professional graphic designer and artist, Doranne Alden's preferred painting medium is watercolour. She enjoys working on various subjects and is mostly inspired by the colour of the composition rather than the subject matter itself. For the use of light and colour in her still life paintings, she is drawn to Cezanne and for the sea, to Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida. She was born in 1963 on the island of Malta and moved to Germany in 1996 and lived there for almost 7 years. She studied Art for a number of years at the Polytechnic School in Malta and also took various short courses in Graphic Design and Interior Design. Her work experience spans several years with various advertising agencies and eventually, before moving overseas, she ran her own advertising company. During the years spent in Germany, she held drawing and watercolour classes for adults. In 2006 Dora, won first prize in the Watercolour Section in a competition organised by the Society of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce, in Malta. As a graphic designer Dora has published photographic calendars, posters and postcards on Malta.

COLOUR, COLOUR AND MORE COLOUR “About the work of Doranne Alden Caruana, one can immediately say that the viewer is attracted by the bold colours that this artist loves to use. One may view an exhibition more or less concise and small of works by this artist from now until mid February and should take this opportunity to meet with Doranne to understand more about the concept of the colour which inspires her to paint. This artist uses the medium of watercolour, but she uses a variety of watercolour called Ecoline, which results in a colour much bolder than traditional watercolours. She explains "I started my career at a young age, and was mostly inspired by my father's artwork, that is Albert Caruana who is a Maltese artist who specialises in 'Watercolour'. Still I chose to enter the art world through Graphic Design in the 1980s, when computers were not what they are today, when to produce graphic design work in advertising meant working fast and effectively." It was during this period that she discovered Ecoline, a medium which she loved immediately and brought her to create spectacularly colourful work. Doranne has now participated in numerous exhibitions large and small, not just in Malta, but also Germany and Austria, but you can count her solos on one hand. The present exhibition, entitled 'Jewelled Colours' (jewel like colours), Doranne presents work which she created during a phase in her life when she found it difficult to paint. Every artist can pass through a period when the muse is not as usual. Still with some effort Doranne admits that she once again started work and whether or not she felt like it she painted. "If you look at the first few paintings I worked on you can notice that I was not in my normal frame of mind” and this is true as the colours are not the usual brightness. Still one can appreciate the paintings where the colour violet resonates and although it is a colour associated with sad moments Doranne managed to create "still life" which still draw you in with its colour. Little by little you start to realise that the artist once again found the usual energy and once again began to paint with the enthusiasm which so distinguishes her work. If one cannot afford to buy an original work of Doranne Caruana Alden, one may instead purchase a few cards which the artist produced for this exhibition. E9-2- E99 is a collective exhibition being held at the Ministry for Culture in Victoria, Gozo. The works on show by filigree artisan Kevin Attard, and artists Doranne Alden, Josephine Cachia and Christian Muscat are an interesting mix of ideas. The concept behind this collective is to show how art can be expressed successfully in different media and materials. Kevin Attard will be showing a selection of his filigree and abstract artwork. For this exhibition Doranne Alden has concentrated on a small format artwork with a theme of various subjects, including her well know still life, landscapes of Gozo, and a few nudes, all worked in acrylic. Josephine Cachia has also chosen to show a small number of her collection, mostly worked in acylic and has concentrated on figure painting and landscape views. Last but not least there is Christian Muscat a relatively new face on the art scene, who will be showing a new conceptual 3D selection of works and a select number of his expressionist works. (Open to the public from 7th January - 31st January 2010 - Monday to Friday between 9.00am and 4.00pm.)
