About ADAM RUSSELL:

Senses of the body and mind alert us to the millions of words, symbols, gestures, pictures, colors, feelings, songs, and memories that collide with us every second. Inside the clamoring cipher that all these impacting elements create, complex meanings are born. Our ongoing relationships, present interactions, and established memories are all linked together forming patterns of awareness. These continuities compose our reality and inform us of our own active participation in the workings of a whole, a larger pattern-- truth. This beautifully complex and intricately patterned truth is as a garment knitted from one thread, a single story with many turns and connections.

Art to me is a forum where I map the turns and connections that I investigate and experience personally. The work is made of the images and meanings from my own experience of truth seeking, translated from mind to hand with metaphor and playful imagination. Thoughts crystallized into a physical composition as an intentional contribution to the whole. Giving and accepting is a natural and observable part of every cycle and we can see through the cycles in nature that balance is always preferred. I create as an effort toward a sustained equilibrium to add my breeze into the piping winds of our collective experience.

I utilize the technical and conceptual skills brought to me by teachers, forefathers and mothers of contribution. They are masters of form, vision, meaning, word, sound, and power. Our influences and ancestors are here, assembled in an echo that resonates their influence in our contemporary language and culture. With this artform, I want to conduct this ancient sound with all available elements in combination to express its profound meaning; pigments, oils, paste, gold leaf, illusion, paint, portraiture, history, repetition, and adornment to illuminate an echo. Diverse thoughts in concert that utilize, respect, and carry on long standing practices while exerting unique meanings as a result of their free association. My artwork is a unique expression that comes from and alludes to a single, very old truth.
